Final matchday of a long season: women's handball team off to Thuringia

Having played their last home game against HSG Bad Wildungen a week ago, the Borussia Dortmund women's handballers are now preparing for their final match of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season on Saturday (21 May). Their opponents are fourth-placed Thüringer HC, who are still battling to secure third spot.

The season has been a long one – starting with the Supercup at the end of August – and will have comprised 16 Champions League games and a run to the play-offs, three games in the DHB-Pokal and a total of 26 league games by the time it concludes against Thüringer HC on Saturday. In actual fact, Borussia "only" had to play 25 Bundesliga games after their away match in Zwickau was cancelled due to numerous corona cases and declared as a victory for BVB. Recently, an element of physical tiredness has understandably been creeping in for leading players like Alina Grijseels and Mia Zschocke, but the spirit and attitude have not dropped off. Quite the contrary. Despite their previous stresses and strains, BVB really went for it and racked up big wins in their final games in Leverkusen and at home to Bad Wildungen.

"We've slightly reduced the training programme, at least in terms of the load. But now we want and need to motivate ourselves once more. then the season will be over. We'll use the fittest players in Thuringia and do without those carrying an injury," explained Borussia boss André Fuhr. Those words clearly mean there will be no comeback for Dana Bleckmann, who could theoretically play again after tearing her cruciate ligament. "We've discussed the situation, but have come to the conclusion that we should refrain from using Dana. We want to minimise the risk of injury," added the coach.

Having won the reverse fixture 32-27 at the start of February, the Dortmund ladies will also be looking to come out on top away to Thüringer HC in Bundesliga match no. 26 and finish the season with only the two defeats – against Bietigheim and Blomberg. Fuhr said: We want to show that we have special quality. That remains our aim on the final matchday."

BVB will travel to Thüringer HC, who are still battling for third place, in second spot. "THC will not give away the win, Thüringen need the points and will try everything to beat us," Fuhr declared. Especially as the battle for third spot between Thüringen and Buxtehude is still on after the North Germans lost 31-27 in Metzingen on Wednesday evening.

Throw-off at the Salza-Halle in Bad Langensalza, Erfurt is at 18:00 CET. The match will also be broadcast live and free-of-charge by Sportdeutschland.TV.
