Wätjen: Debut, assist and the most kilometres covered

2024-05-04 05:27 PM by Borussia Dortmund–  4m read

A clinical Dortmund side already had it wrapped up in the first half and ultimately claimed a deserved margin of victory too, even if the shot count of 21-20 was almost even. BVB had significantly more possession of the ball (59%) and were also considerably stronger in the challenges (58% tackle win rate). The match facts.

Successful debut: In his very first professional match, 18-year-old Kjell Wätjen racked up his first scorer point when he claimed the assist for 34-year-old Marco Reus. In the end he was the hardest-running Borussia player (11.4 km), won 50% of his challenges, delivered 89% of his passes to a team-mate and reached a top speed of 32.5 km/h. Only Niklas Süle (33.0 km/h), Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (34.4 km/h) and Karim Adeyemi (35.4 km/h) ran more quickly today.

Sprinter: By clocking a top speed of 35.36km, Karim Adeyemi became the fastest BVB player of the season ahead of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (35.20 km/h).

Endurance monster: At the time of his substitution, Marco Reus was the hardest-running BVB player. He had covered 8.8 kilometres.

Favourite foe: Borussia Dortmund have won their last six home games against Augsburg. The Bavarian Swabians have not been on a longer losing streak away to any other club in their Bundesliga history.

Fourth place possible: BVB's 17th victory of the season took them to within three points of fourth-placed Leipzig. Terzic's team will be away to Mainz and at home to Darmstadt in the final two rounds of matches.

Season record: The 5-1 was Borussia Dortmund's biggest win of the season (previously 4-0 in Cologne).

Clinical: Youssoufa Moukoko registered the fewest touches of the ball of any player in the first half (12) but shone with two goals and completed 27 sprints – more than any other player.

Brace: Moukoko bagged his second Bundesliga brace; he had previously only managed the feat in the 3-0 home win over VfL Bochum in November 2022.

Provider: It was already the fourth assist of the season for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens; Julian Brandt (11) and Niclas Füllkrug (8) are the only BVB players to have set up more goals.

With his head: Donyell Malen scored his first header of the Bundesliga season. Malen has scored only three of his 26 Bundesliga goals in total with his head. The Dutchman scored his 12th goal of the season and is therefore Dortmund's joint-top scorer in the Bundesliga this season along with Niclas Füllkrug.

Second goal: Felix Nmecha scored his first Bundesliga goal for BVB; he had previously only scored once for Borussia in the Champions League when he netted the winner in a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United on 25 October 2023.

Early opener: For BVB, the goal for 1-0 by Moukoko in the fourth minute was the fastest goal of the season.

First start: Antonios Papadopoulos made the starting line-up for the first time in his Bundesliga career; he had previously come on as a substitute four times (this season in the 1-1 draw in Leverkusen on Matchday 13).

Back in action: Mateu Morey made an appearance in a competitive match for the second time this season (previously for two minutes as a substitute in the 3-0 home victory over Freiburg on Matchday 21). The Spaniard last made the BVB starting XI three years ago, in a 4-1 home win against Bremen in April 2021.

Rotation: The last time there were 10 changes to a BVB starting XI was in April 2013. It was for a 2-1 Bundesliga victory in Düsseldorf between the two Champions League semi-final matches against Real Madrid.

Plenty of goals: The only game to produce more first half-goals in the Bundesliga this season was the Matchday 1 clash between Augsburg and Mönchengladbach (3-3 at the break, 4-4 the final score).
